Pinoy crime film to be shown at Korean film festival

September 12, 2017

MANILA -- A film based on F.H. Batacan's internationally published crime novel, "Smaller and Smaller Circles," will be shown at this year's Busan International Film Festival, it was announced Monday.

The Raya Martin-directed adaptation is among the 298 films selected from 75 countries for screening at the festival, set to run in South Korea's port city of Busan from October 12 to 21.

From the producers of "Heneral Luna," the mystery thriller tells the story of two priests in search of a serial killer in Manila, and stars Sid Lucero, Nonie Buencamino, Bembol Roco, and Carla Humphries.

It joins three other feature films from the Philippines, namely "Those Long Haired Nights" by Gerardo Calagui, "The Decaying" by Sonny Calvento, and "Sea Serpent" from Joseph Laban.

Other Filipino works that were selected were the shorts "Jodilerks dela Cruz, Employee of the Month" and Carlo Fajarda's "Suerte," as well as a documentary from Jewel Maranan, "Tundo."

This will mark the world premiere of "Smaller and Smaller Circles," a project first revealed in 2016 by producers Tuko Film Productions and Buchi Boy Films.

It is based on Batacan's Palanca-winning novel, first published in 2002 before being picked up and released internationally by New York-based publisher Soho Press in 2015.

A schedule for this year's Busan International Film Festival has yet to be updated.

Filipino director Lav Diaz will be among the jury for New Currents, the festival's main competition section that is designed to introduce up-and-coming Asian filmmakers.

It is headed by acclaimed American director Oliver Stone, and includes Bahman Ghobadi ("No One Knows About Persian Cats") from Iran, France's Agnes Godard, and Jang Sun-woo of Korea.
